Renowned television presenter 44-year-old Gail Porter (Scotland) has had a memory of a ‘hellish’ experience in her past. She says being in Channel 5's Big Brother is the worst thing ever. Gail, who is living with alopecia, a condition of disappearing hair including eyelashes and eyebrows, bares her heart recently after being evicted from the show. She spent 20 days in the CBB house.
Talking to the DailyMail, she said: ‘The worst thing ever. And I should know, I’ve been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.’
She shared that the winner of the show James Hill once asked her whether alopecia was contagious. She touched him on the knees and said, "Yes, it is. See – you've got it now."
Inside the house, contestants taunted her and bullied. People used to comfort her. She had to say, 'I have to say: "It's not cancer. It's all right. I'm not going to die." ' The effort to be this buoyant must be exhausting, I say. 'Ha!' She snorts. 'I have to stay on top of my mood. If I feel depressed in the morning, I'm up and I'm out for a run - rain, wind, snow, anything.
Several bitter incidents in the life left her with the physical and mental weaknesses. But she doesn't want to be known by her problems.
That was to promote the magazine's hottest women poll. The incident left her nervous and broken. During an interview, she had told, 'I am old and knackered, bald and mental... but at least I can laugh about it.'
She married Dan Hipgrave in 2001 and separated later. Now she is with her daughter honey. She had a long suffering from depression and insomnia.
Gail's books - Laid Bare: My Story of Love, Fame and Survival, Stepping Stones, The Great Greedy Orge are published.
