Back in 1859, the workers on the oil rigs hated the paraffin-like substance that used to form on the rigs as it had to be regularly cleaned. The reason for the hatred: the substance being slippery and sticky, both at the same time. But it didn’t take them long to realise that the substance brought immediate relief when applied on cuts and burns. With time, more uses of the sticky thing got discovered.
The man behind the brand Vaseline, Robert Chesebrough, a young chemist who researched on petroleum jelly ( also known as petrolatum, white petrolatum, etc.) later noticed that cleansing the lighter, thinner oil products from the rod wax resulted in a light-colored gel. He got the process of making petroleum jelly patented and named it Vaseline. He opened the first factory in New York in 1870.
