My family once had a dog named Rolly for thirteen years. Sadly, he is no more, but since he became a part of our lives, I have always known how much a dog means to the family it stays with, why is it called a man's best friend, and every time I come across the news of someone's dog dying or even getting injured, it makes me sad.
The story of Legend, the Bul-Mastiff of Mersadie Wells-Shahan is however more than just sad and it wrenched my heart. The heroic dog that saved three people from almost dying and sustained some injuries himself is in real sense, a legend.
Damian Strickland, his girlfriend Mersadie Wells-Shahan and her mother Brenda Cronk were attacked by robbers in their house last February. The five men who forced themselves in the house with pistols around 11:14 PM had a sinister agenda on their minds.
On seeing the dog, the robbers tried to tie him down. Legend however, fought back and bit the left hand of one of the intruders. Panicked, the intruders shot Legend twice, before running away.
It was found that out of the two bullets that Legend sustained, one hit his head. The other cut through his shoulder. The brave dog however, kept fighting untill the robbers fled. "I never felt so helpless in my life until my dog got there," said Shahan,. "He completely, completely saved us." Legend recovered within 48 hours in the vet care and was then released.
The suspect had a fresh dog bite on his hand and a gun was also found near him. Legend has to wear a cone around his neck for a little while, but he is fine now.
