In a list of firsts, a district court in Indore on Saturday (May 12) sentenced a man to death for raping a four-month-old girl in April.
"Indore district court announces death sentence for convict in a rape and murder case of a four-month girl in Rajwada," tweeted news agency ANI.
The accused Naveen Gadge was arrested for raping and killing a 4-month old infant. After the horrific incident, he was beaten up by the local residents. After the outrage, the State Bar Council of the state had asked the lawyers not to appear for the accused in court.
Gadge, who lived close to the victim's residence abducted the infant when it was sleeping with the family under a tree in Indore's Rajwada area. After committing the crime, he threw the infant which resulted in its death. Nearby residents were able to recover CCTV footage which showed that the accused took the infant to the basement.
In the recent past, the government has drawn a lot of flak for not approaching cases of crime against women in the right manner. It was within two days of this incident that Centre passed the ordinance to allow the death penalty for rapists of girls below 12 years.
