Petrol pumps are our saviours. If your vehicle immediately stops moving because there's no fuel in it, the one place that will be your go-to is obviously the nearest fuel stations. These stations have also started offering free air services for vehicles where you do not have to pay a single penny to the attendant, and he will fill the air in the tubes of your vehicle. How cool is that?

But many people are still unaware of the fact that this is a free service. Unlike, the air there are many other things that you can do at a petrol pump for free, and no one actually has the right to question you on that.

Here is a list of some rights that we all have as citizens when it comes to a fuel station.

You can check the quality of petrol.

We all have the right to check the quality of the petrol or the diesel at the stations. It is our right to know whether the fuel that we are getting in exchange for the money is of the right quality or not. If the staff of the pump/station don't allow it, an official complaint can be registered on the portal.

This might get a bit tedious and many people might think it is waste of time because they haven't really faced any problem all these years. But, FYI there is a 500 ml cylinder at every petrol pump that helps in checking the density of the fuel.

To check the density the cylinder is filled to about 3/4th and then an instrument is dipped in the cylinder which reads the temperature and the density.

There are some of the basic facilities that are available for free at all petrol pumps. Some stations don't have the amenities, but ideally, they should have it.

1. Free air: You can get free air for your vehicles. If the attendant at the counter asks for money, a complaint can be registered against him.
2. Free drinking water and toilet services.
3. First-aid.
4. Complaint Register: If you do not get these facilities or you are simply not satisfied with them, you can write your complaint in a register too. It is mandatory for all stations to maintain a complain register.

The filter paper test.

The filter paper test.

If after all the examinations you doubt the quality of the petrol that is added in your vehicle, you can go ahead and get a filter paper test done. Under this test, a drop of petrol is added to the filter paper and according to the test results if the drop turns pink the petrol is pure. But, if the drop turns into some other colour the petrol is adulterated.

Free phone calls.

In case of emergency, every consumer is allowed to use free phone call service at the petrol pump. If the staff doesn't allow you can again complain about it because it is mandatory for them to allow the needy consumers to avail the facility.

Even though the machine shows the quantity, you can still investigate the quantity. Every petrol pump should have a 5-litre measuring jug. This measuring jug is checked by the investigation authorities and a malfunction of 25 ml is acceptable but that also should be rectified immediately.

There are a lot of things that we must also take care of as citizens when at a petrol pump.

Some of them are:

1. We must switch off the engine before taking the fuel to avoid the fire that can occur due to spillage of fuel.
2. We must always avoid lighting a match or smoking in pump premises.
3. We must not accept petrol/diesel in bottles or containers because they catch fire easily.

The students of IIT, Kanpur developed a device and named it 'Fuel Quantifier Device'. This device measures the oil per unit time. With this device, we can now actually know the actual amount of oil in the vehicle in just 10 seconds. The cost of the device is estimated to be INR 1,500 to 2,000. However, if the demand will be more price can go down to 500.

That's all, folks!

So the next time you visit a petrol pump keep these things in mind and be an alert citizen.
