Thousands of women face harassment in public places, so much so that we have stopped raising a voice against them. But here is a Delhi University student, who experienced something similar and was brave enough to raise an alarm against it.
A 23-year-old student from Delhi University reported a man who was masturbating next to her on a crowded bus.
When the girl called out for help, no one came to her rescue. However, she was smart enough to record the entire instance.
The incident took place on February 7, but the girl filed the FIR two days later. She was reported telling various news dailies that neither her family nor the police have been very supportive. In fact, they made her wait for six hours to file an FIR.
"If as an educated woman, I was going to ignore the crime, how would I expect other women to report them to police. The man has to be punished," she told Hindustan Times.
In 2015, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that over 2,500 marshals would be deployed in the DTC buses, but no such officers have been spotted.
"The government will also install CCTV cameras in a phased manner. We are now working on this project," the chief minister had said.
In the election manifesto, Aam Aadmi Party had promised to set up Women's Security Force with over 10,000 home guards.
However, we haven't spotted any. Any comments, Mr Kejriwal?
