As the OTT players seem to have gotten acquainted with the varied tastes of Indian viewers, now they are focusing all their energies on producing indigenous shows. What viewers have been missing on their TV sets (especially informative and gripping shows like Byomkesh Bakshi and Bharat Ek Khoj), it looks like OTT players can satiate their thirst for such content. Well, we will only know when these shows come out.
Till then, let's take a quick glimpse at the upcoming shows of this year.
Written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, 'Made in Heaven' is going to be seen on Amazon Prime Video. This show is the story of the competition between two wedding planners. Amazon had tied with Excel movies last year for multiple series. The first one they came out with was 'Inside Edge', which was the fictional story of a T20 cricket franchise and was directed by Karan Anshuman. For Made in Heaven, the only cast member that we know has been finalised at this point in time is Shweta Tripathi (Masaan actress). This is the second thing we are looking forward to from Zoya Akhtar (first being her movie Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh).
Netflix has tied up with Phantom Films to bring out the original series based on the acclaimed eponymous novel 'Sacred Games' by Vikram Chandra. This project has some heavyweights associated with it, right from Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane as co-directors, to Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. The original novel deals with the subject of organised crime, local politics, violence and corruption. Perfect recipe to expect another Black Friday from Anurag Kashyap.
This will be Vivek Oberoi's second outing in a web series. His first was Inside Edge on Amazon Prime Video. His second show 'A Family' is from the stable of Ekta Kapoor and will be shown on ALTBalaji. The show which is a crime drama is set against the backdrop of Mumbai mafia land. Vivek will portray the role of Sharad Juvatkar in the series. Not a new territory for Vivek to play the role of a mafia again.
Netflix India will be bringing this series which is based on Bilal Siddiqi's fiction novel with the same name and is the story of an expelled spy Kabir Anand who is forced to return to his job to save his country's honour and his long-lost love. None other than Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of Kabir and the 8 episode show is a collaboration between Red Chillies and Netflix India. The last time SRK played Kabir, we all know how that turned out.
After ALTBalaji show's on Subhas Chandra Bose, there is another show on the great freedom fighter which is in works. The hit machine Kabir Khan will make his debut in OTT space with the series 'The Forgotten Army'. The show is going to be aired on Amazon Prime Video. The series is the true story of the men and women who fought a heroic war for the independence of India as part of the Indian National Army which was forged out of British defeat in Singapore during WWII and led by the charismatic Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Raj and Krishna DK, known for their quirky subjects and the movies like Go Goa Gone, Happy Ending are making a mini-series called 'A Family Man'. The 10 episode series is a socio-political drama and will star Manoj Bajpayee who is playing the role of a special agent. The platform that it will air on is yet to be finalised.
Ekta Kapoor's ALTBalaji has another show to offer this year, called 'Kapoors' which stars the 'Beyhadh' actor Kushal Tandon along with Ridhima Pandit and Karishma Sharma. Hope the drama gives a peek into the life of Ekta Kapoor and her family.
While Biswa Kalyan Rath came out with his show 'Laakhon Mein Ek' and Sumukhi Suresh with 'Pushpavalli' for Amazon Prime Video last year, we are awaiting Gursimran Khamba's first original show called 'The Ministry', a political satire which will see the global star Irrfan Khan make his entry in the Indian web series scene. Khamba and Irrfan have collaborated earlier for their AIB sketches like 'Every Bollywood Party' and 'Dank Irrfan'. Amazon Prime Video had announced to make eighteen shows last year and is reported to have committed ₹500 crore to create original content for the domestic market.
So much to watch and so little time!
