India, the largest democracy where we have the freedom of speech. And media, being the fourth pillar of democracy, is supposed to be the highest form of free speech. However, when we delve a little deeper, we start questioning the entire notion.

We wonder where we are heading when we see the killings of journalists like Gauri Lankesh who was shot at her home. Threats are an everyday thing really.

Ravish Kumar, Barkha Dutt are some examples who have received death threats as well. And maybe now before even raising their voices, journalists think not once or twice, but hundred times. After all, they could end up being murdered in broad daylight in case they went against any politicians.

Freedom of press might be in danger in India. You can either truly follow ethics of journalism or become a puppet for politicians...

Which brings us to today's question.

Yes, a huge majority has lost faith in media. Over 46,000 people participated in the survey. Which makes us wonder who do people trust these days. It's definitely not the politicians, and now media seems to be out of the list too. Maybe India will still keep believing Babas and religion for a long time. A small 16% believe that media is still unbiased. While 6% people said they weren't sure. A minority also claimed they didn't really care about what was going on in media and politics.

Here are some instances which might give an insight as to people have stopped believing in media:

The Wire was sued by Amit Shah's son, Jay Shah, for Rs 100 crores. Reason? They ran a story on his business transactions highlighting the alleged financial irregularities. The reporter faced intimidation and harassment along with strong defiance from BJP supporters.

Look at what somebody has to say about the media...

Playing the worst role!

Which brings us to the next question...

Does the freedom of the press still exist?!

Reporters without borders, the independent NGO criticises Indian media saying it is threatened by Modi's nationalism. They point out how journalists are increasingly targeted by 'online smear campaigns'. India is ranked 136 in 2017 World Press Freedom Index, among the bottom half (total of 180 countries).

What does that tell us? Getting biased news is highly likely in India.

The constant praising of NaMo could be a political move which makes us wonder whether it is a paid social media move. It is no surprise that the media has been nicknamed 'Godi Media' as we can never be sure about media platforms.

Which still leaves us with the question, is media really independent anymore?
