The fodder case dates back to the time when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the chief minister of Bihar. Fodder scam is a series of financial irregularities that was carried out in the 1980s and 1990s in undivided Bihar. When the CBI was examining claims of misappropriation of government treasury assets to non-existent organisations, they had discovered abnormalities worth Rs 950-crore. Cattles were transported on scooters, oil tankers & trucks and the treasury never questioned the expenses.

After the case was brought to the court for the second day in a row, on January 6, 2018, Bihar's veteran politician Lalu Yadav got sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. 

Lalu Prasad has been in prison since December 23. He was convicted along with 15 others in the second of five Fodder Scam aka Chara Ghotala. 

He was allowed only three visitors a week according to the jail manual.
