Following her one-year occupancy as Miss World, she later denied opting for modelling and films and preferably focused on her medical career. She later finished her M.B.B.S. degree and married her mentor David Powell in 1971. Soon the couple shifted to Dublin, where she began her medical practice.

Currently, she is living a happy marital life with husband Abhishek Bachchan whom she married in 2007. In 2003, she became the leading Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.

In an interview, she revealed that she does not really hook up to any particular plan as she believed in taking one step at a time.
