Some universities are called haunted because they are built on ancient brutal site and some are because they have scenes of tragic suicide and unexplained deaths. These universities embrace the reputations that they have, for all things, paranormal. Even students keep telling the humble ghost story into a campus institution and these tales are enthusiastically passed down from each generation of freshmen to the next.
St. Andrews hold a special position in the history of Scotland as it was said to be the religious center in medieval times. It is believed to be one of the country's most haunted locations. It still retains their medieval charm because of ancient streets. Among the crumbling ruins, a white lady is the most celebrated ghost.
Durham University has 800-year-old castle residence. The 19th Century wife of Bishop Van Mildert who owned the castle before the university has been fallen to her death from its top height of the Black staircase. According to Durham's earliest students, the Grey lady keep floating up and down from the castle's Black Staircase.
A section of the Avenue Campus at Southampton University is said to be haunted by a female phantom. Staff who are working in night shift often heard the sound footsteps and of moving furniture in empty classrooms.
Paranormal activity has taken place in this old university as well. In the years of 1990s, a person who committed suicide by hanging himself is often seen by people in various occasions and as resultant, that college staff and students refuse to enter a 13th Century oak-paneled chamber where it happened last seen.
It is believed that, the ghost of Archbishop William Laud, a former of White Scholar and Oxford chancellor is often spotted at St John's College library. He was beheaded in 1645 for treason.
The ghost of Exeter University is a workman who is often seen near the corridor walls with a brush in one hand and a paint pot in the other. He died when he was on work. Probably, he is there to complete his left work.
Paranormal activities were reported in York when a survey was done. According to the survey of International Ghost Research Foundation, York to be 'Europe's most haunted city'.
Brunel University is built partly on the ground of an isolation hospital for contagious disease. St. Johns campus has unexplained phenomena. A woman working as a secretary says that she has seen 'a young girl in a hospital gown running down the corridor'.
Founder of the Surrey university, Mr. Thomas Holloway's cat has haunted in the university. Even students of the university keep saying that, 'they see a cat but when they turn cat disappear'.
People who live and work in the University of Wales, Newport campus, has seen 6-foot long matron with hairs in a bun. She is said to be the ghost of Bertha Ramsey, who found at the foot of the stairs after falling from the second floor. Even the school's headmaster says that he has seen her at her funeral as well, firstly he thought that she is her twin sister but who knew she never existed.
Staff and students of this university have recounted hearing footsteps and feeling as if they are being watched while in the building. It is said that, it is a ghost of Confederate surgeon Bennett Wood Green who died in 1913.
University of Iowa claims of ghostly experiences made by students. According to some students, they have seen a spirit with a penchant for flicking through TV channels who were haunting their shared home. The ghosts said to be of three female residents who collectively ended their lives after knowing that they all are dating one man.
At former Camarillo State Hospital's site, the University campus was built, between 1936 and 1997. Thousands of people died there that time. People died because of due to the passage of time and others from neglect and sickness. Paranormal investigators who visited university says that its an active location for supernatural activities.
