As per a report in The Covai Post, these girls carried padded baskets on their heads and marched towards the annual ritual of Yezhaikaatha Amman Temple in Vellalore, Madurai.

The girls were asked to stay in the temple and serve the Goddess, this ritual has been followed since a really long time.

If reports are to be believed, when this issue was taken to the knowledge of the Collector K Veera Raghava Rao, he promised to enquire further and ensure the safety of the girls.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Chakkaravarthi along with a committee of Social Welfare to make sure that nothing unfortunate happens.

"When we enquired the parents, they said it is their religious belief and traditional practice and their girl children do not go to school out of their own will as they have been selected to do services to the Goddess. But we have told the village elders that the girls should be allowed to wear upper garments and they have promised to consult the elders and take a decision ahead of the next festival."
