It's been 24 years since the Mumbai blast occurred but it feels like yesterday for people who lost their loved ones in the blasts. The explosion took place on March 12, 1993, in the Mumbai city which killed 257 and left more than 713 people injured.
On September 7, 2017, a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court pronounced the sentence against five convicts including gangster Abu Salem.
Abu Salem has been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh has been imposed on him. The final sentence came after extensive arguments, which began in court from July 16, 2017. Criminals Abu Salem, Taher Merchant, Feroze Khan and Karimullah Khan were convicted of criminal conspiracy, murder and act of terrorism.
A series of 12 destructive bombs exploded in Mumbai on March 12, 1993. It is recorded as the most destructive incident in Indian history. The coordinated attacks were carried out in revenge for earlier riots that killed many Muslims.
Abu Salem, born as Abu Salem Abdul Qayoom Ansari, also known as Aqil Ahmed Azmi and Abu Samaan, is a notorious gangster. He was convicted in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, and for murder of music baron Gulshan Kumar in 1996, Indian actress Manisha's secretary, a builder among others. He has more than 50 other cases against him.
On 20 September 2002, he was arrested along with Monica Bedi by Interpol in Lisbon, Portugal.
Abu Salem is finally sentenced to jail for life. The court has imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on him in connection with 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

In November 2005, Portuguese authorities handed him over to India on the assurance given by the Government of India that the death penalty would not be executed. According to Times Of India, "The charges against Salem could have attracted the maximum punishment. But since he was extradited from Portugal in 2005, a Lisbon court has held that he cannot be awarded death here. Salem, through his lawyer, has also argued that he cannot be jailed for more than 25 years as assured by the Indian government."

As per TOI report, Taher Merchant and Feroze Khan were sentenced to death while Karimullah Khan is sentenced to life. Riyaz Siddiqui, another convict was sentenced 10 years in jail.
While CBI special public prosecutor Deepak Salvi sought the death sentence for Merchant, Feroze and Karimullah, he pressed for life sentences against Salem and Merchant.
Yakub Memon, brother of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon, was hanged in 2015.
About 33 accused are absconding, including key conspirators Dawood Ibrahim, his brother Anees Ibrahim, Mustafa's brother Mohammed Dossa and Tiger Memon.
