Demonetization in India was announced on 8th November 2016 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an overnight ban on Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes to choke tax evaders. After demonetization, the government announced Rs 2000 notes. Later, on 13 June 2017, the RBI introduced new notes for Rs 500. A few days back, on 18 August 2017, RBI introduced ₹50 banknote.
Now RBI has finally launched the missing link, i.e., Rs 200 notes after the go-ahead by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday. The base colour of new note is bright yellow and it carries the signature of RBI governor Urjit Patel.
"Introduction to a new currency denomination and design is done keeping in consideration various factors like ease of transactions for the common man, replacement of soiled banknotes, inflation and the need for combating counterfeiting," the RBI said in a statement.
The dimension of the new Rs 200 banknote will be 66 mm x 146 mm. Denominational numeral 200 is written in Devanagari Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre. The colour of the thread changes from green to blue when the note is tilted. The Guarantee Clause is Governor's signature with Promise Clause and RBI emblem to wards the right of Mahatma Gandhi portrait.
The denominational numeral with Rupee Symbol of Rs 200 in colour changing ink (green to blue) is on the bottom right. The Ashoka Pillar emblem is on the right. The Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (200) watermarks are there. The number panel with numerals is growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side.
On the back side, the year of printing of the note is there with Swachh Bharat logo and slogan. There is a language panel and motif of Sanchi Stupa. Denominational numeral 200 is in Devanagari.
