You must have heard the legend of Ramayana, the legend that speaks of the victory of pure over evil.
So let me ask you a few questions. Do you remember Lord Rama? Goddess Sita? Ravana? Vibhashana? Obviously, you do remember them all. But do you remember Mandodari? Did it take you a minute to recall her? Let me help you.
Mandodari was Ravana's wife. But after everything that happened to Lanka and Ravana, do you ever thought what happened to Mandodari?
According to the legend, Mandodari was a beautiful, pious and moral woman who always guided and advised her husband to do the righteous thing. She always requested Ravana to send Sita back to Lord Rama.
But what happened to her when Ravana died? What did she do then? Here are all the answers to your questions, but let's start from the beginning.
She saw Lord Shiva's bhasma on Madhura's body. Angry Goddess Parvati cursed Madhura, turned her into a frog and sent her to live in a well for next 12 years.
Lord Shiva requested Goddess Parvati for reducing her curse. She agreed and said, "She will turn into her original form, after 12 years of strict penance."
Mayasura, King of Asuras and his wife Hema were praying longed for a daughter. The pair had two sons Mayavi and Dundubhi and after a long wait, they were willing to have a daughter.
Mayasura and Hema decided to sit on a strict compensation as a form of prayer to the Lords. At the same point, Madhura's curse came to an end.
Later, when the pair was busy in completing their penance, Madhura turned into her original self and wailed for help. The pair who was busy in their penance heard Madhura's cry and ran to rescue her from the well. Later, Mayasura and Hema adopted Madhura and named her as Mandodari.
And from here Mandodari's story begins...
Once, Ravana visited Mayasura's place and saw Mandodari. He was attracted to her and asked Mayasura permission to marry his daughter. But Mayasura denied. Later, in fear of Ravana and his faith in Lord Shiva, Mandodari agreed for the marriage. She bore him three sons, Meghanada, Atikaya and Akshayakumara.
Knowing about the curse that one day Lord Rama will kill Ravana, Mandodari begged Ravana to send Sita back. But he denied. She fulfilled all her duties of being a wife. She stood by her husband when he went to the battle, even though when she knew the fate.
After Ravana's death, Lord Rama advised Vibhishana to rule Lanka and take the kingdom forward to growth. He was also advised to marry Mandodari. Lord Rama reminded Mandodari of her duties as a queen.
But later when Lord Rama along with Sita and others, returned to Ayodhya, Mandodari disconnected herself from the outside world.
Later Mandodari decided to return to Lanka and married Vibhishana. She then guided the kingdom to the right path.
The world speaks of many theories regarding Mandodari. One of them states that Sita was Mandodari's daughter. But there isn't any proof to this story.
