We all have seen the Ramayana about 'n' number of times. We've seen it on TV, and yet there are things we don't know about the epic. Rama is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and it's not that Ramayan is all about Rama and Lakshmana, it's rather a story of a whole lot of people including Meghnadh, Dasharatha, Urmila, Parashurama and so on.
One most rarely known fact is about Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana who is not much written in the Ramayana. While Lakshmana accompanied Rama and Sita during their vanvaas, Urmila slept both her and Lakshmana's share of sleep so that he may remain awake to protect Rama and Sita. You won't believe that she slept for an entire exile period of 14 years and woke up only when Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya.
Not just this, there are more such unbelievable facts that you all may have missed reading somewhere. But we've got you covered this time.
Read on as we bring you the lesser-known facts about the various known and unknown characters of Ramayana.
It is believed that when the Goddess of sleep appeared before Lakshmana at the first night of his exile to the forests and when Rama and Sita were asleep. Lakshmana requested the Goddess to give him no sleep for the entire 14 years so that he can stay awake to protect his beloved brother and Sita.
The Goddess of sleep was impressed by Lakshmana so much that she granted the boon to him on one condition that someone else has to bear his sleep. On Lakshmana's request, the Goddess visited his wife Urmila. She agreed to this, and thus Urmila slept for an entire period of 14 years. Thus, during the war, Lakshmana was the only man who killed Meghnadh, the son of Ravana.
Bharata never sat on the throne of Ayodhya. Instead, he placed Lord Rama's slippers on the throne and carried out his duties as a king on Lord Rama's name. He returned the throne to Lord Rama when he returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.
In Tulsidas' Ramayana, it is mentioned that in Sita's Swayamvar, Lord Rama had lifted the bow and arrow of Lord Shiva and broke it. However, there is no such mention of this incident in Valmiki's Ramayana.
Maharshi Valmiki has written Ramayana. Rama and his brothers were born as a result of 'putrakamesti yagya' done by King Dasharatha (at the age 60 years) at the end of which, a bowl of dessert was distributed to all his wives. Sumitra was fed twice, so she gave birth to twins.

Hanuman in a way descended the rotation of earth and Sun's revolution so that it may not rise before time and Lakshmana could be saved.
Most of the people don't know this fact, but while the monstrous Kumbhakarna was doing a yajna (a ritual sacrifice), Lord Brahma appeared before him and was about to grant him a boon.
