Some say dogs are a man's best friend. This statement couldn't be any truer.
When little Caleb Howard, only 6 years old at the time, sustained detrimental injuries from a head-on motor vehicle collision, his entire life took a drastic turn. The once-healthy and energetic boy now suffered from intensive brain injury as well as damage throughout numerous areas of his fragile body. His parents and doctors were heart broken and confused about how long he'll take to recover, if he would ever make it.
The accident was bad and tragic. Experiencing a brain injury isn't easy for anyone, including the ones caring for the individual. The boy was practically lifeless. Imagine what must have gone through his parent's minds when their child was in a hospital fighting for his life. It was definitely an emotional turmoil. Until, this therapy dog came along and changed Caleb and his family's life forever.
When medical experts examined Caleb, they were extremely unsure of whether or not he would survive the accident let alone recover and be the same again. Thankfully, Caleb pulled through.
According to Caleb's dad, Ben Howard, "He broke his lower femur, knee and arm. The impact of the head-on collision was such a sudden stop that the tissue in the brain slammed against his skull and millions of cells were killed."
Caleb's traumatic brain injury was so extensive that it rendered him unable to communicate or perform ordinary functions anymore. Expectedly and unfortunately, depression affected all members of the Howard family.
Only a parent could understand how devastating and heartbreaking it is to see their child in an almost vegetative state due to an unforeseen accident. Hope was in scarcity but when Colonel, a trained and caring dog, entered the scene, everything changed.
Not only did the trained and sweet canine lift the mood of everyone in the room but his presence sparked a changed in Caleb that nobody truly anticipated.
Therapy sessions transformed from being merely painful to a time of laughter and positivity. Caleb displayed a desire to hold and pet Colonel every chance he got and this unique approach to physical therapy proved to be nothing short of special and successful.
Caleb has made giant strides in recovering and regaining those motor skills that once seemed lost forever through this unorthodox approach of therapy. It warms our hearts to see him resume life as a healthy and thriving child who simply adores his new best friend, Colonel. We simply cannot deny the fact that dogs will forever be man's best friend.
