It seems like the love bond between Real Madrid and Uefa Champions League grows stronger every year with the club having a phenomenal record of winning the biggest trophy in Club competitions for a record 11th time. With the club defeating the German Champions Bayern Munich in the Quarter Finals, it seems imminent that the Spanish Giants are on course to become the first club in the history of the competition to win the tournament for two successive seasons.
Real Madrid's amazing history in the Champions League competition is itself a proof that the club will be favorites to win their 12th title this season. Real have enjoyed a mixed season as they were not at their best at the start of the season but slowly they have gathered pace and now with the competition reaching its climax, the club has hit top form as they smacked the mighty Bayern Munich for six goals over the course of two-legged ties.
Most of the media outlets and pundits had predicted a Bayern Munich victory against Real Madrid. However, the Spanish Champions yet again produced an amazing performance to win against the mighty Germans and now they have the momentum by their side as they move forward to the semis.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid may be evenly matched now but its this Uefa Champions League tournament which has always categorized Real Madrid as "The Bigger team in the City." In 2014, Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the Final of the Uefa Champions League courtesy of a 93rd min Sergio Ramos header which made it 1-1 and took the game to extra time. Real Madrid then went on to score 3 more goals in the extra time eventually winning the Final 4-1.
In 2015, the city rivals met again, this time in the Quarter Final of the Champions League. With the first leg being played out 0-0 at the Calderon, it was all to play for in the second leg. Both sides went on attack from the word go but once again it was Real Madrid who proved to be the better side with Chicharito scoring the winner in the 88th min, once again breaking the Atletico hearts.
In 2016, it was again the Madrid derby showdown in the Final with once again the game going to extra time, but this time around it stayed 1-1 after extra time. But Real Madrid once again came out on top, this time on penalties with Cristiano Ronaldo calmly slotting home the decisive penalty and giving Real Madrid their 2nd Uefa Champions League triumph in the space of just 3 years.
It is yet to be seen whether Real can again upset their city rivals or not but with the recent evidence, we can only see one team progressing!
Since the Frenchman took over the reigns at Real Madrid, it has all been good, and it just keeps getting better. The Portuguese talisman notched up five goals in the two-legged tie against Bayern Munich becoming the first ever player to score 100 goals in European Club Competitions and Champions League. His form is gonna be the key to Madrid's success as they move forward to the Semi-Finals and the Real Madrid winger would be looking forward to making amends for his slow start to the season.
As once quoted by Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos, "There is no team bigger than Real Madrid." These words itself are the number one reason why Real Madrid will become the first side ever to retain the Uefa Champions League.
No team in the history of the competition has yet managed to win the Champions League twice in a row, but with the current Real Madrid squad having a perfect blend of youth and experience, it seems very likely that they will become the first side ever to do it.
