Dev Patel starred in the British teen drama 'Skins' when he was 16, and it was his mom who got him the audition. In an interview, the actor said, "The reason I'm in the industry is because of her. Dev's parents, father Raj Patel and mother Anita Patel are Gujarati-Hindus, and both were born in Nairobi, Kenya. They expatriated separately to England in their teens and only met first in London. The actor was born in Harrow, London on April 23, 1990, and has an older sister, Trushna. Both Dev and Trushna are raised in the Hindu faith.

Patel started training at the Rayners Lane Academy of Taekwondo in 2000 and competed in the AIMAA World Championship in 2004 where Patel won a Bronze medal.

Patel's mother took him for the audition after she saw the casting ad in a newspaper even though he had a science exam the next day. Patel was cast in the role of Anwar Kharral, a British Pakistani Muslim teenager after two auditions. The characterization of Anwar was partly based on Dev's personality, and the role was written specifically for Patel after he was cast. The first series was aired in January 2007 and went on to win the Rose d'Or for Drama in 2008 and also received a 2008 BAFTA nomination for Best Drama Series.

Dev made his film debut in Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' in the year 2008, and this is one of his facts that isn't surprising, but did you know Dev wasn't the first choice for the role. Ruslaan Mumtaz was first chosen for the role but the director Danny Boyle found him 'too good-looking, ' and the role went to Patel. It was Boyle's daughter, Caitlin, then 17 who pointed out the 'Skins' actor Dev Patel.

To get into the skin of the character, Patel went along with Boyle while scouting locations so he could observe the Dharavi slums. For a real experience, Dev worked at a call center and a hotel where he washed dishes.
