Patrick Gray and Justin Skeesuck are both 41 years old and have known each other for most of their lives. They went to middle school and high school with one another and have lived in the same neighborhood. They were even born about 36 hours apart from each other.
The two are truly great friends. But soon Skeesuck suffered a serious setback in his life.
A few years ago, Skeesuck was diagnosed with multifocal acquired motor axonopathy.
This is a condition that gradually causes disfiguration in the body and symptoms that are similar to ALS. The condition progresses and worsens over time.
Over the years Skeesuck has lost control over many of his everyday functions. Gray has been there to help him through as a caretaker.
One day in 2012 while watching a travel program, Justin had an idea. He wanted to travel the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain. It is a 500-mile long path far from his home of Eagle, Idaho, just outside Boise.
He developed the idea not long after discovering it. Patrick saw it as his mission to cover that trek.
After extensive training, the two went out to the trail in June 2014.
Patrick pushed Justin along in his wheelchair throughout the entire 500-mile trek.
They received the help of nearly a hundred other travelers en route.
The trip along the route went through a variety of beautiful spaces. It went through the Pyrenees and other mountain ranges. They even went across the Meseta, the massive desert found in the middle of the country.
Overall, it took about 35 days for the two of them to go through the countryside.
This trip has inspired many people who have heard their incredible story. It has been featured on many programs including on Today, Fox and Friends and 'The Meredith Vieira Show'.
The duo formed a new organisation called Push Inc. The group helps those who are disabled to help achieve more in their lives and to be more active.
Their story is also the subject of a new book called 'I'll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles', 'Two Best Friends', and 'One Wheelchair'. The book will be available in stores on June 6, 2017. They have also made a documentary film of the same name and are available for speaking engagements.
