In December of 2015, a police horse named Charlotte broke her leg on the wheel well of a concrete truck and had to be euthanized on the scene.
Below is her tragic story!
On 3 December 2015 at 10:15 a.m. Charlotte was startled by a noise which caused her to back into a concrete truck in the lane next to her. Due to the extent of her injuries, Charlotte had to be put to sleep at the scene.
During Charlotte's last painful moments on the earth, Officer Herrejon's partner Ronald Curry laid beside the horse, embracing her.
Many newspapers who covered the story at the time erroneously reported that it was Herrejon himself who offered the horse comfort in her final moments, however since he was in the hospital at the time, this was not a possibility.
A bystander took a photograph of the heartbreaking scene which marked Charlotte's final moments on the earth. In the next few days following Charlotte's demise, the photograph mentioned (and pictured above) went viral.
The reason why the photograph went viral is because it is a true testament to the bond an animal and a human can share. It also serves as proof of the devastation caused by death, whether that death is of a human or an animal.
The whole Houston Police Department was devastated by Charlotte's death. A formal memorial statement for the much-loved animal was released on their Facebook page which is summarized as follows: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Charlotte, an HPD Mounted Patrol horse, who died in the line of duty this morning in a motor vehicle accident. She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for 4 years. She will be missed."
