What I have gone through is the story of many girls these days.
Several times it might have happened with you that you have opened spam folder of your messenger and found sexually explicit content sent by an unknown person and you chose to ignore? This is the problem with us, we choose to remain silent. We must observe zero tolerance of visual sexual harassment. Don't we?
Perverters have crossed their limits and they need to be taught a lesson. What educational and societal institutions were incapable of teaching, we will teach them. Here I have made a small attempt towards this.
Netizens of my country, raise your voice for the right cause!
The internet which was previously meant for users' convenience has now turned into a medium of satisfying sexual urges. We are living with men around us who have sexual urges beyond the normal level.
When they are not able to satisfy this need in the real world, they resort to the virtual world. They don't even mind sending their nudes to girls who are strangers. But, they overlook its impact on girl's mind. How is that audacity satisfying their desire when the same men are very protective of their sisters & possessive of their wives?
Many girls and women face this visual sexual harassment every day but choose to remain silent and delete the texts. But, we need to understand that deleting texts, is not helping anymore because these activities are not coming to an end by your ignorance.
I have been a victim myself 4 years back. I remained silent because I was scared and believe me, I am not proud of it. I was not aware of the judicial remedies and all I did was blocking him, which many of us do, usually.
A few days back, Rupakshi Puri, a senior human resource executive, KMV Group Hyderabad reached us with her story, "I made my IG page open a few days back since I started writing and since then I get 'hey beautiful' messages every now & then, which though a little intruding but can be ignored, so that's what I did with them. But, the other day I got a dick picture with a customary hi and I knew a step should be taken not just for me but also for all the girls, young and old, who get such pics just because these idiots felt that it's okay to be a jerk."
Rupakshi shared her inner voice with WittyFeed. She chose to surface the issue by writing a poem about it.
Section 67 read with section 67A states punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act, etc., in electronic form. If someone publishes or transmits or causes to be published or transmitted any material in the electronic form which contains sexually explicit act, shall be punished on first conviction with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years. And with fine, which may extend to ten lakh rupees and in the event of second or subsequent conviction with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years and also with fine which may extend to ten lakh rupees.
Various sections of IPC can be resorted along with section 67 & 67A of Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.
Section 509 is for any word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. Any form of sexual abuse faced by women online can fall under this.
Section 499 is for defamation. Any violent, sexist slanders can fall in under this section.
Section 503 is for criminal intimidation. Rape threats, threat to kill or threat to harm will fall under this section.
Section 507 is for criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication. Rape threats and other threats of violence where the harasser is unknown (useful in a cyber world of 'trolls' and fluid identities) can be addressed under this section.
SI Pooja Muvel, Indore, while talking to WittyFeed said that if someone creates fake ID or do morphism is charged under various sections of IPC & Indian Penal Code. In the context of transmitting sexually explicit content, 67A operates and if content transferred is less explicit it falls under section 67. She added that she handles such cases regularly and have seen accused who were sentenced imprisonment & fine under above sections.
WittyFeed reached Dr. Ashwin Jain, Consulting Psychiatrist & Sexologist from Indore where he detailed that there are three categories of sexuality, namely, normal sexuality, hyper-sexuality & perversion. These type of incidents mostly involve boys with pervert mentality & most of the times they face hyper-sexuality also.
Hyper-sexuality is characterized by excessive sexual desire/libido & attraction towards opposite sex. In order to counter that, a person can increase the frequency of masturbation & sexual encounters. But, the sexual behavior towards the other person will be normally socially acceptable & within limits.
However, in perversion, the person releases his sexual impulses in a very abnormal & inappropriate manner, which is socially unacceptable. In this state of mind, boy tries to calm down his sexual impulse by showing his private parts to a girl and he does it to encourage sexual desire of the girl by giving her visual sexual stimulation.
Dr. Jain added that girls usually do not report because they think they would be blamed by parents & relatives for using social media. Secondly, they think they may be discouraged by people around them to meet their male friends. He says, if they complain, they also feel ashamed of showing or explaining the private parts of some other person.
He concluded with saying that perversion is a psychiatric disorder. Other than perversion, Dr. Jain says, many guys are the victim of Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD).
