This three-year-old girl suffered from a disfiguring massive tumor that had been growing on her face.
The parents of this Brazilian girl took to social media and pleaded for the surgery in order to get their child's tumor removed.
It all started when Dr. Celso Palmieri, an assistant professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA, was reviewing online publications of his country.
The post was actually a plea from Melyssa's parents seeking help to get their daughter to the United States for getting the tumor removed.
He arranged for the procedure and even managed to find housing for the family and get the fee of the hospital stay sponsored.
"This is a very rare tumor in this age group of a child of a three-year-old girl with what is a myxoma. A typically benign, but extremely aggressive tumor."
The surgical procedure was reckoned a success.
...almost left her on the path of a malnourished child. But thankfully, Melyssa's had her surgery and got her jaw constructed once again with a titanium plate.
For now, she is recovering from her first surgery.
