The Chainsmokers' Journey From Being DJs To Creating A #1 Billboard Hot 100 Song

"The Chainsmokers: Sure We are Alex Pall and Drew Taggart from the USA. We love drinking Tequila and are better known for our music than our dancing."

The Chainsmokers are an American DJ duo, who started their journey in 2012. Their journey from "Selfie" days to the latest "Closer" has not been an easy one. Of course, they did play some bad shows and took some poor decisions but let's just not focus on them.

Their song, "Selfie" which reached number sixteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number three in Australia, and number eleven in the United Kingdom in 2014 followed by "Roses" which was listed on the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015 and everyone's favorite, "Don't Let me Down" became their first song to reach top 5 single. The list doesn't end here; the latest "Closer" became their first number-one single on the chart. The song features vocals from Halsey.

Let's head on to the story to know more about your favourite American DJ duo. Well, you're welcome in advance!

The Chainsmokers: Members

Alexander "Alex" Pall grew up in Westchester County, New York. His mother is a house maker and his father is an art dealer.

Andrew "Drew" Taggart was raised in Freeport, Maine. His mother is a teacher by profession and his father sold prosthetics. At the age of 15, he was diverted towards EDM. While in Argentina, he was introduced to the music of Daft Punk, David Guetta and Trentemøller.

In one of the interviews:

When they were asked about their good and bad memories, they said:

"Well to be honest not many bad memories because they have all taught us valuable lessons and got us to this point in our careers and lives which we are very happy and excited about. With that said, we definitely have played some bad shows and made some poor decisions, but we prefer not to point those out haha…"

Music style

Inspired by Pharrell Williams and Deadmau5, they describe their music as "blurring the lines between indie, pop music, dance music, and hip-hop."

After their first hit, Selfie, this is how they continued their success.

"Haha yeah I mean we were glad selfie was such a success, but it also didn't represent us as artists. So now that Roses is becoming a hit in Europe, it's very exciting for us because we hope that now this song will represent us and people will come to realise we have some great music to offer… Otherwise, we are just being ourselves and making the music we think is special and not worrying about having hits… that will drive you crazy."

"Erase" was their first song that they recorded with Priyanka Chopra.

Yes, not many know about the Indian actress Priyanka Chopra being a part of one of their projects.

This is how they deal with hype!

"Hype to us means something that people talk about but isn't real. We think there aren't many acts in our genre even close to as real as us. We write, produce, sing on, and perform our own music. We put our true selves out there for everyone to see and hide nothing. There is no leather jacket fake social media or any bullshit like that… and that's the way it will continue to be…"

"American Idol incident"

This incident made their social media status in a state of confusion. They were asked to perform their track live on the American Idol stage, but since they're DJs, they're really not so cool with playing a single.

"They were frolicking around the stage taking selfies and it was just stupid."

They were being called sellout and almost every Tweet relating to American Idol that day was along the lines of this one.

But now, this American Duo has simply taken it to the next level.

Now, here they are, The Chainsmokers have reached the top and have become the maestro, producing hits after hits, making entries at award shows and being able to play at any stage all across the world. They have surely had a hell of a ride, but it's perfectly okay to say it all paid off very handsomely. Their astonishing appearance at Ultra Music Festival's Worldwide stage and Tiesto's set are a few examples that show the duo is going well.
