 A 24-year-old woman is thought to be the first person in the world to give birth to a baby at the Portland hospital in London, after using an ovary that she had cryogenically frozen in childhood.

Mrs Al Matrooshi was born with a blood disorder and to treat it, she had to undergo chemotherapy. Hence, in order to protect her organs, she originally had her ovary tissue removed and frozen at the age of just nine.

Surgeons then stored her ovarian tissue in liquid nitrogen containers.

The ovarian tissue was stored for 13 years before transplanting it back to her body. And after 13 years, the doctors decided to transplant it back.

Initially, they transplanted five fragments of the ovarian tissue into her body.

Surgeons defrosted the tissue and transplanted few parts back into her body. But somehow the initial fragments didn't help her in conceiving.

So, she along with the husband Ahmed decided to go for IVF treatment.

The treatment increased the chances of conceiving. Experts told that three embryos were produced later from those frozen segments and out of which two were implanted.

And finally, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Sara Matthews, a consultant in gynaecology and fertility, stated,

"This is a huge step forward. We know that ovarian tissue transplantation works for older women, but we've never known if we could take tissue from a child, freeze it and make it work again. I am so happy for the family."
