Airports are usually seen as nothing more than utilitarian points of air travel entry or exit and in some cases waiting during layovers. Traveling to distant places anyways takes time and nobody wants to waste extra hours waiting at the airport, irrespective of its beautiful architecture.
However, for some of us, lower airfares sound attractive even though they come with long layovers.
The amount we save while booking cheaper flights certainly looks enticing but leaves us wondering how to kill time during a long layover.
So, here we are today with 10 cool ways you can spend time during long layovers without looking like a dull maniac.
Those of you who are fond of sketching or doodling can fish out their tools from the bags and set out to having some fun at the airport. Make some sketches of people around you like a sleeping man, a dull couple looking opposite ways or even a sloppy guy spilling coffee over his shirt.
And for those who aren't as good at art, nobody is gonna judge you on your creativity so just use your pen/pencil anyway you wish to. Who knows the hidden artist in you eventually wakes up and you experience a eureka moment!
Airport shopping isn't light on pockets but try your luck and go around looking for any shops that are giving away samples or freebies.
Window shopping doesn't hurt anyone!
If you have a long halt at a place, then try stepping out of the airport to have a mini tour of the nearby attractions. All the airports have easy and cheap transport to the main city that you may want to research on beforehand.
A quick local tour of the city of your layover may add to your memorable moments.
It is not a bad idea to initiate a chat with a fellow traveler. At the worst, he/she may turn out to be a total snob and you may change your seat but if your stars favor your, you both might become cool buddies for the rest of your lives.

Utilize the opportunity instead of sitting at a place and gazing around.
Airports are beautiful and if you happen to be in one of those situated in Asia, then do not miss out on exploring the architectural marvel.
The Dubai airport, Beijing airport and Incheon International Airport in South Korea are incredibly designed airports that will take you by surprise. Besides Asia, there are a number of other airports like the Denver International Airport and the Carrasco International Airport that are examples of architectural excellence.
Indulge in a food tour of the airport and try out some exotic and gourmet dishes. If you happen to be at the London's Heathrow airport, then head over to Plane Food, a restaurant owned by the celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.
Walk around the airport and look for specialty cafes for a quick bite into sumptuous meals and enticing desserts.
This reminds me of a time when I was waiting to board my flight to Las Vegas and suddenly heard a piano tune that instantly cheered up my soul. I turned around to see a teen playing on the piano that was kept near the water filter. All the lips curved into a refreshing smile while the teen continued to use his playful fingers deftly on the piano. He was applauded by one and all present there.
Why don't you give it a try as well? You may even carry your flute or mouth organ for a musical layover.
Some airports are quite considerate and have spas and saloons at the airports to pamper the exhausted travelers who are in need of a pampering session. You may want to hop into one of these and enjoy a relaxed time while the clock continues to move closer to your boarding time.
Massage chairs and sofas are also quite common at busy airports.
Ludo, chess, cards, or a simple tic tac toe can be enjoyed with a fellow traveler without any hiccups. Keep any of these games handy in your bag and invite a bored fellow traveler to have some fun.
The next time you are traveling by air and have a long layover to cater to, try any of these ideas to utilize your time while your flight invites you to board.
