Dying is a part of life- in fact, it is the ultimate part of life. Various cultures, at various points in time, have had a variety of rituals and customs that deal with the death of people. Even today, certain rituals and rules are followed when someone passes away.
However, during the Victorian Era, these 'rituals' and 'customs' were a bit awkward. And after seeing these photographs, even you will feel the same way.

Yes, he is already dead. But perhaps his family wanted a badass photo of him.
How could the people of that time not feel terrified of this stuff?

Sometimes, it's really too hard to understand the kinds of things history has in store for us.
You know, for memory's sake.
After all, it was a relatively new technology at the time, and so it is possible that they saw it as something that we aren't able to guess today.
The flowers are a nice touch.
But even then, doing something like this today is something we can't even imagine.
