The reflex epidemic action of yawning! Your mouth is wide open, and eardrums are stretched. You are either too tired, sleepy or bored. All you want is some time for yourself. Yawning is an activity to rejuvenate the brain. Yawning is so infectious that even if you see a stranger yawn, you cannot stop from grabbing a yawn for.yourself.
The moment you get bored, yawning is triggered. Not only humans, but animals also experience yawning. Thus, it a universal phenomenon.

Even when we are not born, we yawn. Studies have shown that even 11-week-old fetuses yawn. Yawning is a part and parcel of human life.
Researchers have claimed that yawning causes arousal. Our heart rate can as much by 30% while yawning. Thus, yawning is a sign of arousal and can be sexual also.
We yawn when we are tired or sleepy or bored. But, yawning increases the blood flow to the brain, making you more attentive. There have been boring meetings, lectures and talks when we could not stop dragging our hands to the mouth, to hide the yawn.

It is studied that on an average, a person will muster upto 240,000 in a lifetime. Wow, that's a huge number. So going by the calculations, a person spends about 400 hours of his life, yawning!
When we are sleepy, tired or bored, we breathe more slowly. The brain and body are not able to have ample amount of oxygen. So, the brain makes us take an extra breath. This breath is deeper and longer, called a yawn. Yawn helps us to take in more oxygen and release carbon dioxide fully.
The human brain operates best only within a narrow range of temperature. The brain has to be kept cool to work well. Influx and outflux of oxygen cool the brain. Thus yawning is triggered, to increase the amount of oxygen supply to the brain.
Sleep chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine increase the activity of yawn. Whereas, brain chemicals such as endorphins reduce the frequency of yawns.
We all have experienced this in our lives. There have been ample instances when a single yawn has triggered yawning in a room full of people. The answer to this is empathy, a human virtue.
But, there is still no reason that is 100% responsible for yawning. A lot of research is underway to get the best possible answer.
