Addiction can be a dangerous thing. They say that excess of everything is bad. When one gets addicted to a thing, one just can't have enough of it. Wikipedia defines addiction "as a medical condition characterised by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences." So, basically, addiction essentially deals with repeated exposure to a thing that arouses a sense of desire. Now, a thing that arouses our desire may not necessary be an intoxicant. Yes, you read it correctly; one doesn't necessarily be a drug or an alcohol addict. For, a person can be addicted to shopping, food, work, sex, internet, gambling, music, movies, video games, and whatnot.
In today's technological age, gaming has become an essential part of the everyday life. Gamers can spend hours and hours on addictive games. According to a survey, the average time a gamer spends per week playing video games ranges between 8 to 10 hours. That's around 500 hours per year. The gamers may either spend this time on several fun addicting games, mastering one after the other or may either, or may spend months completely engrossed in some addicting game.
Video game addiction can be contagious. It spreads like wildfire. It is often rather late before we start taking cognizance of our addition to a particular video game. Losing one's sleep owing to video game addiction is quite common. Once we are addicted, we lose track of time. A game session that we started playing in the afternoon might go on endlessly until well past midnight. Or a game session which began in the evening can go on till the next morning. The time just flies by. Under the spell, we will continue to play the game till the very end, but the end just never comes. Once we are sucked into the digital world, the escape is impossible.

According to a study, the time that we spend on playing some of the most addicting games in the world is the time that can actually be utilised for much greater deeds. The multiplayer feature has made modern video games more interactive and real time. It has also made gaming more addictive in nature. Some of the games are never-ending. It is like an endless loop. There is always a new challenge that invariably keeps you hooked. In other words, you can never really beat the machine.
