Personal relationships are always tricky, but they are even more delicate when they resolve around running a business worth millions or billions of dollars. Just ask Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates!
In a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, Steve Ballmer expanded on his relationship with university friend and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, explaining that the two have "drifted apart." The reason? The gosh darn smartphones!
It wasn't because Gates spent too much time on his smartphone over dinner or because Ballmer didn't call enough. Then what? Just scroll it down.
The "brotherly relationship" with Bill Gates was twisted in part by his push, to invest heavily in tablets and smartphones.
By that time, Apple was already well established. He said Gates and the board seemed reluctant to do so.
"I think there was a fundamental disagreement about how important it was to be in the hardware business," Ballmer said.
The company released its first tablet, the Surface RT in 2012. But the product was poorly received, and Microsoft took a $900 million write-down as a result.
He was the CEO of Microsoft for 14 years and was replaced by current CEO Satya Nadella. Since then, he and Bill Gates have "drifted apart."
"We started off as friends, but then really got quite enmeshed around Microsoft. Since I've gone, we really have drifted a little bit.", he continued.
