Ratan Tata took the charge of Tata Sons in 1991 when J.R.D. Tata stepped down and Ratan Tata has been nurturing the Tata enterprise since then. Indian business tycoon handed over the responsibilities of Tata group to Cyrus P Mistry in December 2012. Recently, Tata trusts appointed Ratan Tata as interim chairman and the panel is searching for the new chairman of the group.

When the tsunami hit India in December 2004, Ratan Tata canceled his holiday for his birthday celebration and returned back to India immediately. He conducted an urgent meeting of all the top CEOs in order to provide aid to the affected people. He even started a reconstruction program in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, an area devastated by the tsunami.
