I have a small niece, Samantha. She is 4-years-old. Whenever I visit her place for having the delicious food made by my aunt, she sits with us on the chair as a prodigy and eats with all of us. What makes that sight worth seeing is that, despite all the elders sitting on the dining table use their right hands to eat food, she uses her left hand to pick up those small bites from her plate. Her mom makes every possible effort to make her use the right one (so that she doesn't stand out, obviously) but she is a rebel at that!
That makes me cherish my childhood memories when I was a kid, and my parents used to address me to eat with a right hand and use the right hand for maximum of my works. They wanted me to be on the 'majority' side you see.
But, there are many people(though less in numbers) throughout the whole world who use their left hand most of the times. But, have you ever wondered why these some people are lefties? Read on to find out the reason to it!
Yes, you read that right. It is all spontaneous you know, that whenever you get a phone call, and you are a right-handed person, you will hold the phone in your left hand and pen down things with your right hand. Isn't it? It is a very less known fact that most of the people use 40 percent of their left ear, 30 percent of their left eye and 20 percent, the left foot. Merely 10 percent of the people use their left hand!
Researchers who study human hand preference, have found that the reason behind this is biological or if I say more precisely, Genetic. The genetic theories prove that why 85 percent of the population is right-handed and why only a 15 percent is of the left-handed people.
Okay, so there are two alleles or manifestations of a gene at the same genetic location that are responsible for handedness. One of the alleles is a D gene(dextral), that is the most common gene in the population which causes right-handedness. And the other allele is a C gene (for chance). The C gene has the least probability to occur in the genetic heritage, but if it occurs, the handedness of a person is undecidable. There is a 50 percent chance of the individual to turn out to be right-handed and an equivalent chance to become left-handed.
The oddity with these theories is that the genetic composition of an individual may be manipulated by environmental, social and cultural pressures and it is proved scientifically. The presence of right-handed children in families with left-handed parents and vice-versa is a result of this variation.
The possible combinations of it being, DD individuals who are strongly right-handed, DC individuals who turn out to be mostly right-handed and CC individuals who are either right-handed or left-handed.
The human brain has two hemispheres- the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere. The left hemisphere controls the movement of the right hand and the right hemisphere controls the movement of the left hand.
Well, the 'south-paws' are very unlucky you see. Be it with using those pair of scissors or opening that Coca-Cola can is a tough task! Thank God we don't live in those olden times when the lefties were believed to be some sort of devils! It was assumed that some evil spirits conquer their bodies and thus, they are born as lefties.
However, the general observation has also been that the left-handers are more intelligent, creative and broad-minded but, we have also often heard people saying that the lefties are more introvert and shy. They die soon and also suffer from many immune diseases. They are persecuted and what not. Com'on now, we live in a society where education and awareness is at the zenith. People should realize that these myths only restrict the lefties to prove their excellence.
Science has achieved tremendous success in finding out whether the baby in the worm is left-handed or right-handed with the help of ultrasound technique. A study was conducted and it was found that, out of 10, nine babies sucked their right thumb in the womb, while only one sucked the left thumb. And with this, it could be predetermined. But still, the question is why is this number so less? Researchers are trying their best to find, what is it that causes such a small population to turn out as lefties.
