Yoshinori Ohsumi, 71

Yoshinori Ohsumi, 71

Category: Physiology or Medicine

Awarded for: His discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy. He is the professor of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The concept of autophagy states, 'the cell could destroy its own contents by enclosing it in membranes, forming sack-like vesicles that were transported to a recycling compartment, called the lysosome, for degradation.'

Appreciation: The jury said that he has helped in leading a new paradigm to understand the recycling of the cells. The autophagic process can also help in several conditions including cancer and neurological disease.

Receiving: Eight million Swedish Krona (around $936,000 or 834,000 euros).

Jointly to: F. Duncan Haldane, John Michael Kosterlitz, and David James Thouless

Jointly to: F. Duncan Haldane, John Michael Kosterlitz, and David James Thouless

Category: Physics

Awarded for: The theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.

--Michael Kosterlitz and David Thouless discovered that superconductivity or supra fluidity cannot take place in thin layers but could occur in the low temperatures. Also, explained the mechanism that makes superconductivity disappear at the higher temperatures.

--Duncan Haldane overturned that how  topological concepts could be used to understand the properties of chains of small magnets found in some materials.

Appreciation: The committee said that the three have used advanced mathematical methods to study unusual phases of matter such as superconductors, superfluids or magnetic thin films.

Receiving: Thouless received half of the prize, $461,589.60, while Haldane and Kosterlitz were awarded a quarter each: $230,794.80.

Jointly to: Jean Pierre Sauvage, Sir Fraser Stoddart, and Bernard Feringa.

Category: Chemistry

Awarded for: Designing and synthesis of the molecular machines.

-- The first step towards a molecular machine was taken by Jean-Pierre Sauvage in 1983 where he linked two ring-shaped molecules together to form a chain, which was called a catenane.

-- The second step was taken by Fraser Stoddart in 1991 when he developed a rotaxane. He threaded a molecular ring onto a thin molecular axle and also showed that the ring was able to move along the axle.

-- Bernard Feringa was the first person to develop a molecular motor; in 1999 he got a molecular rotor blade to spin continually in the same direction.

Appreciation: The committee said that the Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 2016 have given a new dimension to Chemistry by demonstrating how the miniaturization of technology can lead to a revolution.

Receiving: About $307,726.40 to each.

Juan Manuel Santos, 65

Juan Manuel Santos, 65

Category: Peace

Awarded for: Pursuing a deal to end the longest running war in the America; 52 years of conflict with a leftist rebel group, that to just five days after Colombians rejected the agreement in a referendum result.

Appreciation: The committee said that it hopes that this peace prize will encourage him and provide him the strength to succeed in this demanding task. Also, the committee expects that the Colombian people will give good results out of the reconciliation process.

Receiving: The prize amount this year is 8 million Swedish kronor, or about $930,000.

Jointly to: Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström

Jointly to: Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström

Category: Economics

Awarded for: Developing modern ways to write business contracts in various sectors such as car insurance, bonuses for chief executives and the provision of public services.

Appreciation: The committee said that work is not bound to define what a good contract is because it depends upon the circumstances. Also, helping parties to have a clear approach towards the important design issues.

Receiving: A prize money of $925,000 from the Swedish Riksbank will be shared by both.
