Alada Marada Thimmakka aka Saalumarada Thimmakka hails from Hulikal village in the Magadi Taluk of Ramanagar district in Karnataka. When she was young, she was married to Chikkaiah, a cattle herder, who was a native of Hulikal village. There was the saddest part of this couple's marriage, which made them take this initiative. Thimmakka couple was never blessed with a child of their own, and that was the time which gave birth to this revolution.
Thimmakka couple due to their poverty and fate of being childless, always faced boycott of the society and its people. To get rid of this pain from the society, Thimmakka and her husband, who always had an inclination for the environment, decided to sow seeds and nurture and care for trees grown out of them. They literally considered all those saplings as their own offsprings and decided to expand it into a big family.
And this was the time, when the couple pledged not to stop. But there was never a child's play. It took them all blood, sweat and tears to grow those trees. But they were keen on their goals, despite several distractions and difficulties, they never gave 'stopping' a thought.
There were plenty of Banyan trees in the village, so the couple chose to graft saplings from Banyan trees. After facing a ton of difficulties, they succeeded in grafting ten saplings in the initial year. The grafting was done on a stretch of land of 4 kilometers falling in between the villages of Hulikal and Kuddor. The couple used to carry water needed for saplings on their foot. This initiative was not started to take stop, but was started to keep going, just the way we keep going on for a good upbringing of our kids.
When they embarked on their journey, they were sure about putting efforts but were unsure about the results. In the first year they grafted 10 saplings, then 15 in second and reached 20 saplings in the third years. After there was no looking back for Saalumarada and her better half.
In this way, Saalumarada and her husband devoted their life for afforestation. As they say, Where there is a will there is a way, similarly, this lady and her husband with their strong will power, made it unbelievable big. Today the number of trees they nurtured has crossed 300 has reached to around 384 and Saalumarada has still no plan to take a break. But the irony of this great soul's life is her poverty. Although she is a great environmentalist, she still falls below the poverty line.
She still runs her family of two in a sum of Rs. 500 per month. But stands firm on her belief that, each one of us should fulfill their responsibilities towards society and should always preserve humanity. She has won numerous awards and accolades.
