The University of Aberdeen, Scotland, conducted a research, which found that watching various sitcoms, movies or reading books together with your partner can actually strengthen you closer than ever. Two introverts in a relationship can be brought closer if they watch similar TV shows, movies etc.
According to the researchers, these similarities between the individuals helps them feel more connected.
"Previously, sharing a social world with a partner has been conceptualized in terms of sharing real-world social experiences. However, creating these experiences may not always be possible."
"Fortunately, humans are remarkably flexible in finding ways to fulfill their social needs… When people's need for social connections is undermined, they turn to a variety of social surrogates that provide alternate pathways to meet this need."
259 couples in committed relationships. They were divided into two categories. The first category was based on the couples who had number of mutual friends, and the ones with less number of mutual friends, but watches a lot of TV shows and movies (books, too).
The ones with lesser friends and higher media consumption reported a higher relationship satisfaction.
Ultimately, it's intimacy which lets a person incorporate his/her partner's aspects into his/her own personality. This process or experience is termed as 'self-expansion' and can bring couples closer to each other.
