I am sure you all must have heard the story of a king where he asks his soldier about how come that beggar is happy... and then assumes that it might be because of the shirt he is wearing. In hunger to become as contented as the beggar, the king asks his soldier to bring his shirt so that he can wear it, but upon wearing it, he felt no change. It is then when he discovered that the magic of happiness inside the beggar was of the feeling that he has 'nothing to lose' and on the other hand the king has a lot.
All this depends on 'hope' and 'desire'. The king had everything but he was still craving for happiness. But why to blame the king, because we all have that character inside ourselves. We all are the same king in our stories. We never stop longing for things we don't have.
But not going in a very negative mode, this desire can also be transformed into something fruitful which not everyone does it. So come, let us know about learn about desire in depth and its impacts.
Osho says,"Desire without any object, desire without being goal-oriented, unmotivated desire, pure desire, is God. The energy called desire is the same energy as God." I have never looked upon desire like this and it is very important for us to know that our desire can actually change things because it is creativity.
We all know that our list of 'wants' will always be endless. And if we see it in practicality, want can be referred to as a negative term because it will lead you to nothing. But yes desire is our positive energy to achieve something. So, always desire to 'achieve' more and not 'want' more.
You are having a feeling of desire because you are jealous or you have been treated badly by the one who has more resources than you. You want more money or more power. The man who is after money may not know why he is after the money. He may himself think and believe that he loves money, but that is only on the surface of his consciousness.
And the same is the case with all other desires. Men want more power, more fame, longer life, better health just because they want to be more.
Yes, one of your dreams may come true one day but that does not mean you will get fully blissful. Say, for instance, you want to earn money and you want expansion, but now you have money and no expansion. This incomplete dream of yours will eat you from inside urging you to crave for more, that if you are capable enough to earn more money then you are surely capable enough to expand. You need to understand that desire has the capacity to disappoint you.
You should always have a flame inside you but how to use it is in your hands.
You know, this great line by Osho is very true which many of us see but fail to understand,"If you watch carefully, money, power, prestige -- nothing satisfies. On the contrary, they make you more discontented because when you were poor there was a hope that one day the money was going to happen and all would be settled forever, and then you would relax and enjoy. Now that has happened, and there seems to be no sign of any relaxation."
You should have the insight that no object can fulfill your desire. Your desire is divine and as big as sky, therefore no object can fill it.
Oh yes! This is a very half-witted thing we all do it. In the greed to reach to what is not in our hands, we often tend to lose what we possess today. In order to achieve a bigger house, you can lose peace; you can have a bigger bank balance but this will lead to your madness. But why so? Because then you will have a tension to prevent them from losing.
Always remember that 'to gain something you have to lose something', but while desiring big you can lose bigger.
Desire in itself is not wrong. The desire for money, the desire for power, the desire for prestige, are wrong objects for desire -- let it be very clear. Say, for example, poison can take a life and even save by becoming a medicine. Run after a good thing. If you have an inner impulse to conquer the world, it is the very moment where you have failed, rather, think of winning the world by winning people's hearts.
Learn to cherish your desire, don't be against it because to be against it is to be against yourself and against all.
Desire is your energy, infact, it is your only energy, so learn to identify and change your object. Stop going after money rather let your desire have a new object called God. Stop desiring objects. Start making your desire pure of all objects -- worldly, otherworldly. Then your ordinary life will become so intense, so passionate, that whatsoever you touch will be transformed. The baser metal will become gold, and the dead tree will come to bloom again.
