Competing with others is good, but before that you should know with whom are you competing-- with the other person or the person inside you who is certainly not equivalent to the other person.

What he is talking about is that a person inside you dies when he gets struck by inferiority complex because you loose the 'real you' in the complexities of the world.

Some people with inferiority complex compensate their disorder with denial. They run from themselves and the world. They think everything is normal with them yet something frustrates. But it is very important to realize the real you as it is necessary to remember that the whole immensity exists within man; it is necessary to remember that the divine exists within man. The flame is inside you only and nobody else can snatch it from you.

When I was unhappy in my teenage about my hair type, and I wanted them to be perfectly straight, my mom said that God always gives us hair according to our face structure, or say the type that will suit us the most, I realized that some things are born with us to complement us. 

Coming on the inferiority part, we should first know what part of us is making us feel inferior, the physical appearance or failure to achieve anything you wanted. Everybody has a something special in them, you just need to read and analyze yourself and start working on it.

Certainly, there are people who would try to mock you down but apart from them, sometimes you start developing a fear of people that somebody is noticing you and trying to keep a check on what you are doing and therefore you have to be up to the mark to the society.

You will start finding ways to suppress the inferiority complex, just to show that you are something. Do not feel that you are empty from inside. Inferiority itself becomes the race for superiority.
