She opted for termination because the doctors informed her that there are very few chances of baby's survival.

Mermaid syndrome is a rare disorder in which the baby hardly survives for a few hours after birth.

The causes behind sirenomelia are still unknown, but this rare disorder affects one in every 100,000 babies.

This rare congenital deformity causes the fusion of legs in turn giving them the appearance of a mermaid's tail.

Reports suggest that there are only two survivors of this rare syndrome in the world.

Milagros Cerron is one of those two unfortunate babies.

Fortunately, this mermaid baby managed to survive after her birth.

Another case of sirenomelia is reported of an American girl named Shiloh Pepin.

She was born in Maine, in 1999 and had dialysis and several kidney transplants. Luckily, she survived despite all the odds. A documentary made by TLC 'Extraordinary People: Mermaid Child' depicts the hardships faced by Shiloh and her family. Unfortunately, she died at the age of 10.
