In the Indian value system, teachers hold a place higher than the parents. Whenever asked to introduce himself, the great archer Arjuna preferred to introduce himself not as a prince but as the pupil of guru Drona. Undeniably a good teacher can play a pivotal role in shaping up the life of his/her pupil. A teacher's proper support and guidance are the paramount in helping an individual achieve his/her goal in life. Often a teacher's blessings can make all the difference in the world for a pupil. It can be the difference between success and failure. Karna was Arjuna's equal in the art of archery but he didn't have the blessings of his guru Parashurama who had cursed him for lying to him. Arjuna, on the other hand, had the blessing of his teacher and so at the opportune moment when he caught Karna off guard, he felled his defenseless adversary with his arrow.
India has had the tradition of Gurukula since the ancient times. There is a mention of Gurukulas at Gurugram, Varuni, Yajnavalkya, etc. in the Upanishads. The Vedic school of thought talks about Upanayana, a compulsory Sanskara or activity for a Hindu, according to which all individuals are prescribed to be students and remain unmarried from the age of 8 to 25. The Gurukulas were the oldest known forms of public schools that were traditionally supported by public donation. When the Gurukula system was declining during the colonial era, Dayananda Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj, and his pupil Swami Shraddhanand pioneered the modern gurukul system. Even today several gurukuls as well as schools and colleges, are run by a non-governmental educational organization called the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) education system.
Every year on the 5th of September, Teachers' Day is celebrated to honor and acknowledge the efforts of teachers who play a decisive role in shaping the careers of students on whose shoulders the fate of the country rests. The day has been marked for celebration since 1962. For, it was on this day Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who became the second President of India in 1962, was born in the year 1888. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher and statesman who served in the capacity of Vice President from 1952-1962.
One of the most distinguished scholars of the 20th century, Dr. Radhakrishnan was bestowed with several honors during his life: a knighthood in 1931; the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1954; honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. Despite all these honors, Dr. Radhakrishnan remained a humble man. Out of his salary of Rs. 10,000, he donated 7,500 to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund every month. In his opinion, the teachers should be the brightest minds in the country and should aim to gain the affection of pupils, for respect cannot be ordered but should be earned. Dr. Radhakrishnan had wished that instead of celebrating his birthday every year on the 5th of September, it would be better if the nation celebrated it as Teachers' Day.
So, on the occasion of Teachers' Day, let's have a look at some of the wackiest teacher memes available on the internet.
