To successfully chop onions without shedding tears, light a candle before chopping so that the flame can absorb the gases that cause irritation in eyes.
It is said that chopping yellow onions tend to cause more irritation in eyes than the red ones. Therefore, choose less pungent onions.
Chopping onions underwater may prevent sulphuric compounds from reaching eyes that form tears.
Refrigerating onions 15 minutes before chopping can reduce the level of irritation.
I may sound silly but this really works! Just hold matchstick between your teeth while chopping the onions as the gas emitted by the onions can be absorbed by the tip of a matchstick.
Keeping bread between the mouth will absorb the sulphuric compounds released by onions and reduce the irritation.
