The history of medical science is full of cruelty and death.
Undoubtedly, medical science has advanced wonderfully with time. There are medications and treatments available for almost all the life-threatening diseases. But in the 1900s, visiting a doctor was not less than a nightmare. It is because doctors were ever ready to operate brutally using a scalpel for any medical condition.

It was the time when surgeons were learning to dissect the human body and they used to operate in a barbaric manner. Doctors used to operate without hand gloves and face masks in the operation theater.
Surgeons used to operate on babies without anesthesia. They used to open up their skin with scalpels, poke the internal organs and later stitch their skin. Medical practitioners used muscle relaxants to paralyze the babies during the procedure. This was "standard operating procedure" even at places like Oxford University and Boston Children's Hospital.
Experimental operations to save the life of a patient were extremely painful, horrible, and, in many instances, unsuccessful.
Even after the discovery of anesthetics and antiseptics, surgery remained quite a painful task.
Operations were accomplished either in general wards, a small operating room, or in front of hundreds of students in the ordinary lecture theatre.
Surgeons used to interrupt the nerve tracts to and from the frontal lobe of the brain to bring the cognitive and personality changes in the patient.
Surgeons used to bore hole in the patient's head so that the demons can escape and patient gets rid of the illness.
Medical practitioners used to place magnets on certain areas of a patient's body for restoring the proper flow of body fluids.
In this therapy, patients were made to remain continuously submerged in water for days to relax them.
Surgeries were performed without any mechanism for pain control and infection. Surgeons performed procedures in their street shoes and clothes.
