The secret behind the day and time of India's Independence.
"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom."
This historical statement by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru from his famous Independence Day speech (Tryst with Destiny) never fails to give us goosebumps whenever we read or hear it.
Our independence was hard fought. The British ruled over our land for a long time. But then, The Wheel of Time turned, and India got freedom from 'British Raj'.
You cannot cage the bird for a long time, right? Britishers had caged this 'Golden Sparrow' for more than 200 years. But, as they say, some birds are born to fly very high, now, this bird has grown with time and it is continuously flying high with pride.
On August 15, 2017, India will be celebrating its 71st Independence Day. Here are some of the secrets behind the day, time and year of India's Independence Day.
The Quit India Movement or the Revolt of 1942 or August Revolution of 1942 was the most popular mass movement in the series of agitations led by Mahatma Gandhi in the course of the freedom struggle.
This awakened the masses as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose among others worked from behind the scene to raise the patriotic pitch. The leaders of Indian National Congress played an effective role in mobilising masses to strengthen India's freedom movement. Though the movement had gathered momentum, the decisive moment was yet to come.
By the time the World War II ended in 1945, the British were financially weak. They were on the brink of bankruptcy. The historic win of Labour Party in the Britain elections of 1945 was well received by our freedom fighters because the Labour Party had promised to work on granting independence to India.
The plan initially was to transfer power from Britain to India by June 1948. But All India Muslim League leader Muhammed Ali Jinnah stuck to his demand for partition of India. Nehru refused the proposal. By this time, communal violence began to spread across the country.
By the month of June, Congress had given consent to the partition of the country. On June 3, 1947, Prime Minister Atlee announced the Partition Plan or June 3 Plan in the House of Commons in London.
And India finally won the freedom.
It was Lord Mountbatten who selected the date of August 15 because it is said that, it was very lucky for his career. He was the commander of the allied forces during the World War II when Japanese surrendered before him.
There was an outrage among astrologers across India because they considered August 15, 1947, as "unfortunate & unholy" date. After astrological calculations, they suggested that the midnight hour between 11.51 pm and 12.39 am or the "Abhijeet Muhurta" was a perfect time for our Independence.
The movie is releasing all over India in Hindi (as PARTITION: 1947) & English (as VICEROY'S HOUSE) on 18th August 2017.
