A costly affair

A costly affair

Historians and scholars believe that Shah Jahan never wanted to be buried alongside his wife. Instead, he was planning something very big which would make all previous monuments look ordinary. What was this very big?

The Black Taj Mahal

The Black Taj Mahal

It is said that Shah Jahan wanted a replica of the White Taj Mahal which would be black in colour. It was to be constructed by the same workers and had to be of the same dimensions. The black Taj Mahal was for Shah Jahan himself.

In the above image, Shah Jahan is seen with his three sons - Dara Shikoh, Shah Shuja and Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb shared a bitter relationship with Shah Jahan and his brothers. He also accused his brothers of alcoholism and womanising. Aurangzeb went to the extent of imprisoning his own father which also affected the ongoing constructions under his father's rule.

Some scholars and historians suggest that the blackened marbles that lie on the other side of the river Yamuna are the remains of an unconstructed monument and it maybe the Black Taj. Whereas others consider it just a myth which spread by the word of mouth. A majority of the historians believe that the black marbles on the other side were not originally black but turned black in the course of time.

India's pride

India's pride

The Black Taj Mahal was meant to be a replica of the original Taj but couldn't be completed. Like the Black Taj, there have been actual replicas of the Taj all around the world. There are at least 7 look-alikes of the Taj around the world which are situated in UP, Bangladesh, the UK, Dubai, China, Maharashtra, and California. But nothing is as royal and magnificent as the Taj of Agra.

A masterpiece which can never be copied.

It is better to fail in originality then to succeed in imitation.
