Mountain climbing is a passion, but it's not an easy passion to acquire, especially, when you're climbing Mt. Everest and all odds are against you. At the altitude of around 8000 meters, even breathing is a task to be done. Imagine how difficult it is to survive with chilly winds and frostbites with carrying an oxygen cylinder on back?
Many mountaineers have died on the way up to the summit of Mt. Everest while trying to achieve their dream. I find it quite inspiring because Charles Bukowski once said, "Find what you love and let it kill you because for all things will kill you, both slowly and fastly, it's much better to be killed by a lover." And, we all know that a mountaineer's first love is climbing mountains.
But their dead bodies are still lying there frozen on the way to the summit of Mt. Everest because it is impossible to recover these bodies from those tough conditions with atmospheric pressure about one-third of that at sea level.
It is so dangerous to recover these bodies, but still, some expeditions are occasionally set out to identify and cover the body to give him/her a more dignified resting place.
Let's check out these dead bodies lying on Mt. Everest and story behind their death.
One of the most famous dead bodies on Mt. Everest is that of 'Green Boots'. This is the body of Indian climber Tsewang Paljor, who was a part of an unfortunate climbing group of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
His group was caught in one the deadliest storm- 1996 Mount Everest Disaster. Unfortunately, he was separated from the group and took a shelter in a little cave where he took his last breath.
Since then, it's used as a landmark for other mountaineers to gauge their distance to the summit.
George was the first climber who tried to climb the Mt. Everest in 1924, but his body was not identified until 1999. If he would have survived, he may have been the first person to climb the roof of the world.
This body has been lying there for long but still is not identified.
She was climbing with her husband in 1999, but both of them separated. While searching for each other, the husband died by falling off a cliff, and she died because of frostbite. Her husband's body was recovered in the year 2000.
Two other climbers who were in Francys' group later returned to the Everest in 2007 and wrapped her in a flag to give her a more dignified resting place. Francys was first American woman to climb the Mt. Everest without using the bottled oxygen.
This is another unknown body which is not yet identified and it is quite mummified because of lying there for so long.
She reached the summit in 2012 and supposedly spent 25 minutes celebrating her victory. But while descending from the summit, she ran out of oxygen and died due to the exhaustion.
Her body is still lying 300m below the summit, draped in the Canadian flag.
This is yet another unknown body waiting to be identified.
Hannelore was a German climber who died in 1976 due to extreme exposure and frostbite.
It is believed that she took a nap while resting on her backpack, fell asleep and never woke up again.
It is another unknown body which is yet to be identified and is lying at the bottom of a dangerous cliff.
So, these are the dead bodies lying on Mt. Everest for so long. I hope you like the story.
