Ever wondered why do we have two nostrils? Why not one? The advantages of two eyes and ears and other such paired organs in our body are quite obvious but why are there two holes in our nose. Is it a side effect of symmetry in our body or do these two nostrils play an important function?
Each organ in our body has a role to play, let's find out do the two holes in our nose actually have a function and a reason to be or are they just so that we don't look odd.
We know why we have two ears. They help us localize the source of the sound and also are the reason behind the stereo effect.
We also know the importance of two eyes. They are the reason why we see everything in 3D and also perceive the depth of image in front of us.
Unlike our eyes and ears we have only one nose but two nostrils. Two noses within one nose. But how does that benefits us?
Sometimes, you just feel like throughout the day one nasal cavity is more open and easier to breathe through than the another. Well, that's not psychological. It is actually happening. This is called nasal cycle. Your one of the nasal walls is more swollen than the another. This changes every 2-3 hours.
Try breathing only from your right nostril and then left. You will find that it's easier to breathe through one nostril than the another.
You might know that our nose serves as an air filter. The nasal cycle happens so that while you breathe from one nostril your another nostril can get cleaned. This makes it possible for our body simultaneously to clean the air filter of our nose and breath properly at the same time.
Nostrils are also important to specialize in different types of smells. As we read that nasal cycle is responsible for the better flow of air in one nostril, for some time, than the another. It's said that some ingredients in the air are better detected when the air flow is slow and some when the air reaches our receptor faster.
Well, here are the reasons why do we have two nostrils instead of one.
