If a guy promises to marry a girl and have sexual intercourse with her, the girl has the power to file a case against the man in case he breaches his promise.
Nearly 20-30% of rape cases reported in India fall under the category of 'breach of the promise to marry.'
It is because cheated women have sufficient evidence to file a case against their fraud lovers.
But the court doesn't have any right to punish a man for a consensual relationship. There are certain conditions under which the Indian judiciary can punish the suspect.
According to the study of Delhi's courts in 2013, 109 promise of marriage cases were reported in the 460 rape cases.
