Beauty contests have always been a source of pride for many people and nations. From Miss Venezuela to Miss Philippines, the victory of a single woman can make the whole country feel beautiful and proud.
But what if a contest once thought to be only about heterosexual woman includes a participant with a different sexual orientation? Find out here!
Miss Erin O'Flaherty recently won as Miss Missouri 2015 and she cannot wait to compete in the Miss America contest.
This is because Miss Erin O'Flaherty is actually a lesbian. More than that, she is open about it.
Basically, she is doing something historical and significnat for a wonderful community.
After all, the LGBT community is still seen as immoral by other people. Many people need to be educated about acceptance and discrimination.
Young people in the LGBT sector are significantly likelier to commit suicide compare to young heterosexuals because of the bullying and feeling that they are not accepted, among other factors.
Through her efforts, she wants to inspire young people in the LGBT community to strive for greatness and be happy.
But even if she was afraid, she realized that she had to do it to realize who she really was.
The competition will be in Atlantic City in the state of New Jersey. It will air on ABC on September.
