Despite many controversies, Udta Punjab managed to land on its feet with one cut instead of 23. Bravo! The movie released this morning and the audience, especially the youth is expecting a lot from it.
Let's read my review to find out if 'Udta Punjab' is worth the fuss or not?
'Udta' meaning fly in Hindi - metaphorical to 'getting high' from the drug use. The movie depicts a tragic reality in Punjab. This is why I used 'Girta Punjab' in the title above.
Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is an accidental rock star & a regular user. He rhymes coke with cock. An outspoken, crazy drug addict has simply lost in the tragic ecstasy of drugs; when the reality finally hits him hard in the head. Tattoos, long messy hair, nonsense talks and all sorts of stuff a drug addict do, Shahid was the right fit for the role.
Sartaj (Diljit Dosanjh) is a corrupt cop, who has no idea about the side-effects of drugs on the people. He takes the concept of corruption for granted, when one day, Dr. Preet (Kareena Kapoor Khan) opens his eyes & gives him a reality check, when Sartaj's own brother, Balli, becomes the victim of drug abuse. This was Diljit Dosanjh's first movie in Bollywood. He did a great job.
Moreover, today is also the release day of Diljit Dosanjh's Punjabi movie, Sardaarji 2.
Watch the trailer here.
Alia Bhatt played a role of a Bihari immigrant. Her character is full of zeal, yet all the gruesome acts performed upon her on-screen are quite disturbing.
Moreover, Chaubey's job is to send a message to the people about how the drugs affect people's lives. He did a tremendous job keeping in mind not to strut off this case scenario in a glamorous way. The movie justified the reality.
Amit Trivedi did it again! The music fits the mood perfectly. The lyrics added a perfect essence to the theme. Almost every song in the movie is Punjabi.
However, the second half of the movie failed to match the score with the first. Also, the cop-doctor love story failed to ignite its spark.
Punjab is known for its brisky culture, appetite, attire and what not. However, Punjab doesn't fit these attributes anymore. You have no idea what goes behind those closed doors.
The current scenario of Punjab is similar to Hotel California. You just can't leave. You must have no idea about how many Balli(s) are waiting to be rescued. Punjab isn't about its lushy farms and romance anymore.
To conclude, the theme was perfect. It seemed like the amalgamation of Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Quentin Tarantino. The movie was all about closure, which it failed to arrive at, yet worth a watch.
P.S: The movie is NOT meant for kids!
