As there are numerous ways by which tapeworms attack the body, the most prominent one is by the intake of pork. Yes, undercooked pork carries with itself pork tapeworms that directly enter the body.
The under-cooked pork carries pork tapeworm, Taenia solium and once they enter the body, they move to every organ of it including eyes and the most importantly, brain.
When the tapeworm enters the body, the person experiences regular headaches, seizures and weakness in the legs. The person tends to become lethargic. This condition is also referred to as Sparganosis.
Between 1953 and 2013, the number of infections recorded due to the parasite - Spirometra tapeworm were 300. They get invaded in the human body by either being in contact with the infected animals or water.
There are two ways by which tapeworms infest itself into the human body. Firstly by consuming the undercooked pork, resulting an intestinal infection.
The second form of infections is the larval form, by being in contact with the feces of infected human being or any pig and it further affects other tissues including nervous system and the main brain.
The infection inside the nervous system causes neurocysticercosis that causes a disease called ''Epilepsy". This causes the neurological disturbance and sensory disturbance.
There are two means by which the disorder neurocysticercosis occurs is – poor sanitation and hygiene. Very minute things like - no proper washing of hands can even leave you with infection.
There is a surgical treatment for the infections caused by Spirometra. Also, a few drugs have been discovered recently like - praziquantel that can prove effective in such cases.
