The world of medicine has gone through a lot of breakthroughs over the years. Now, we even have vaccines for dengue and more research is being done to combat cancer, among other diseases.
But not all medical dilemmas are solved in time. This is the sad yet inspiring story of a young woman who passed away because of a fatal medical mistake.
Demi is a 22-year-old woman who passed away on February 23.
When Demi was only a child, she discovered a benign tumor located in her liver after having a checkup. Because of this, she had regular checkups growing up.
Demi, who is also a makeup artist, had a short but incredibly painful battle with an aggressive type of cancer.
Back in November 2015, Demi started to feel pain in her body. She went to the doctor, and she was told that she was releasing human chorionic gonadotropin, also known as HCG.
HCG is a hormone that is created by an embryo after implantation occurs. Thus, HCG is observed during pregnancy tests.
The number of HCG in a woman does increase whenever she is pregnant, but its level can also rise if cancer exists in a woman's body. This means that having ovarian or liver cancer will increase one's HCG level.
Demi had taken contraceptives and she had no other signs of being pregnant, so the doctors suggested that she should take an ultrasound just to be sure.
The ultrasound revealed that Demi was not pregnant. Demi underwent a laparoscopic surgery, and doctors finally realized that she had a tumor. Worse, cancer had already spread to her body.
Demi's father, Chris Wright, was really sad about the revelation. However, Demi was courageous and noted that everything's going to be okay.
Demi died young, and her boyfriend named Mitch Gregory feels that they were robbed. Now, Demi is deemed an inspiration. Her family has started to raise money so that cancer research in the United Kingdom could be developed further.
